You must be wondering, what is this <strong>CII,<\/strong> and why is it important for selling long-held shares, aren\u2019t you? So, in this article, we will see how the government has altered the <strong>CII for FY26<\/strong> and how it can impact you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-cost-inflation-index-cii-how-does-it-work\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_the_Cost_Inflation_Index_CII_How_does_it_work\"><\/span>What is the Cost Inflation Index (CII)? How does it work?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, let\u2019s begin with <strong>what CII is.<\/strong> To understand the entirety of this term, we need to first understand what it means. So, CII is a number that is issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in India. This number is used for adjusting the purchase price of certain assets for <strong>inflation<\/strong> while deriving <strong>long-term capital gains<\/strong> and <strong>long-term capital gain taxes <\/strong>(LTCGT).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CII adjusts the cost of the asset to reflect the price rise due to the <strong>inflation rate<\/strong> in the country. This adjusted price is known as the indexed price, which is then used for long-term capital gain tax calculations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is an example to understand the same.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose you purchased 10000 shares for \u20b910 each in 2010 when the CII was 100.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the indexed price of the shares you hold would be \u2013&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Indexed Price = (10000*\u20b910) * (376\/100) = \u20b9376000<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Sales Price = \u20b950 per share = \u20b950*10000 = \u20b9500000<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Capital Gain = \u20b9500000 \u2013 \u20b9376000<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><strong><em>= \u20b9124000<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Now, the LTCGT has to be paid on \u20b9124000. However, if indexation doesn\u2019t happen, then the Purchase price will remain = \u20b910*10000 = \u20b9100000<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Therefore, the capital gain in that case would be = \u20b9500000 \u2013 \u20b9100000 = \u20b9400000.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>So, LTCGT has to be paid on \u20b9400000.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now this reflects why CII is crucial. Cost Inflation Index helps in charging taxes on the real profit made by the investor for holding the asset for the long term, and not on the price inflation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-indexation-policy-and-cii-impact\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Indexation_Policy_and_CII_Impact\"><\/span>Indexation Policy and CII Impact<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Indexation benefit was always available for long-term capital gains, but it was in July 2024, the benefit ceased to exist. As per the Finance Act 2024, which was introduced last year, the government changed the <strong>long-term capital gain taxes<\/strong> to 12.5% without indexation benefit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, there is an option to use the indexation benefit for the sale of land and buildings only if the assets have been acquired before 23 July 2024. For other assets, such as shares, gold, and patents, the <strong>indexation benefit<\/strong> is no longer available.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-is-this-important-for-an-investor\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_is_this_important_for_an_investor\"><\/span>Why is this important for an investor?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are an investor who is holding stocks for the long term, and this year you are planning to sell them off, then you must consider the fact that there is no more indexation benefit available.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All your <strong>capital gains<\/strong> will be used for <strong>long-term capital gain tax<\/strong> compilation as per the new LTCGT laws.
