When prices rise faster in villages, the effect on the national consumer price index becomes harder to offset.<\/p>\n    <p>The rural-urban divide began widening in February as food prices weighed more heavily on rural households. The fallout from the West Asia war affected rural areas partly through fuel-related shortages, including liquefied petroleum gas. The sharpest gap was in biogas and gobar gas, where rural inflation stood at 17.7% compared with 4.64% in cities.<\/p>\n    <p>Other fuel substitutes also showed sharper rural pressure:<\/p>\n    <ul>\n      <li>Coal inflation in rural areas stood at 10.4%, more than 400 basis points above the urban rate<\/li>\n      <li>Dung cake inflation reached 4.6% in villages, more than 250 basis points above the urban figure<\/li>\n      <li>Petrol, diesel, and LPG inflation stayed broadly similar across both geographies<\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n\n    <h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Core_Inflation_Also_Running_Higher_in_Rural_Areas\"><\/span>Core Inflation Also Running Higher in Rural Areas<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n    <p>Core inflation, which strips out food and fuel, also rose in villages. The sharpest rural-urban gap within core categories was in the personal care, social protection, and miscellaneous goods and services group, where the difference was 2.3 percentage points.<\/p>\n    <p>Within that group, 16 of 28 items recorded higher inflation in rural areas than in urban areas. Categories showing wider rural price pressure included:<\/p>\n    <ul>\n      <li>Gold, diamond, and platinum jewellery at 37.5%, which was 1.3 percentage points above the urban rate<\/li>\n      <li>Suitcases and umbrellas<\/li>\n      <li>Services provided by priests<\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n\n    <div class=\"callout callout-note\">\n      <span class=\"callout-icon\">\ud83d\udccc<\/span>\n      <div class=\"callout-body\">\n        <div class=\"callout-label\">Note<\/div>\n        <p>Clothing and footwear also reflected the pattern.
